In Northern France around 1140, the breathtaking
style of Gothic Architecture captured the eyes of many countries. This
was a style of architecture can be found as cathedrals, and castles. The style
gives a picturesque view of buildings interior and exterior that contains
volume, light, and towering heights. Personally, I have slight fear of gothic
architecture due to the high grounds, and some of the dark details created such
as Gargoyles. However, I am also mesmerized and shocked by the smallest details
carved into every wall, column, and window. It surprises me how people spent
months to perfect such large structures.
Gothic
architecture has its complexity in detail and precise construction. The image
below shows a diagram of a Gothic building model. As you can see, there are
different parts to the building that makes its Gothic style like the Archivolt,
and the towers. Archivolts gave an ornamental feel of an arch, the arch is
molded into several arcs. The towers placed on top of the buildings created the
anticipated height according to the characteristics of gothic architecture.
Another common detail used on Gothic buildings
are Gargoyles. As I previously mentioned in my introduction, Gargoyles are not
as pleasant to my eyes as it is to its creator. The reason why I am afraid of
Gargoyles is simply because of its evil petrifying teeth, and sharp claws.
However its use and symbolism on Cathedrals like the Notre Dame helps me think
beyond its image. many gargoyles are used as storm gutters to drain water from
a building to prevent damage. The symbolism of gargoyles are reminders that all
living creatures are made with the hands and the love of god. The utilization
and symbolism of gargoyles brings a positive feel to gothic architecture,
therefore making it important to include gargoyles in gothic architecture.
Gothic
architecture really caught my attention after learning about Cathédrale Notre
Dame de Paris. This building is one of the most popular places in Paris, and
most historic Cathedrals in the world. I would be delighted to learn it
background, and the gothic style created through the building.
